A calcaneal spur is a small bony projection from the back or underside of the heel bone. The calcaneus, also known as the back or underside of the heel bone, develops bony spurs when the Achilles tendon becomes inflamed and overloaded. The localized tendons are forced to take on the weight that was previously held by the Achilles tendon, causing tenderness in the back of the heel. The tendons are constantly being agitated as the patient rests, then gets up again. This causes damage to the tendons, so the body will try to repair them by wrapping them into bone, or often called a spur. The newly formed spur on the back of the heel is actually an attempt at healing. Most of the time, calcaneal spurs cause pain, but in some cases, they show no signs or symptoms at all.
Treatments for calcaneal spurs range from simple pain relief to even surgery. Inflammation can be reduced by using ice packs. Stress on tendons can be reduced by wearing proper footwear that gives support to the heel, therefore, taking care of the spur. Here we offer orthotics for proper foot support, ice packs to take care of inflammation, and much more.
