Arthritis of the Knee

Causes and Symptoms

Single-joint arthritis

There may be a history of trauma, with resulting injury to the affected joint with possible misalignment and actual damage of the joint. The joint becomes inflamed with accompanying pain, stiffness, redness and swelling.

Osteoarthritis

Hereditary genes can cause a person to be predisposed to develop what is called Osteoarthritis, which is a disease of the cartilage involving the body’s joints. Little is understood about its etiology, but it is thought to be an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own joints. It is most common in the elderly and is the single most cause of disability.  Symptoms of the disease involving the knee joint include:

  • Localized pain, which usually is alleviated when the leg is elevated
  • Inflammation of the joint, with redness, swelling and often warmth of
           the skin

  • Stiffness, especially when first getting out of bed or up from resting in a chair
  • Instability of the knee, often with a sensation of it “giving out”

Other symptoms of this disease may include:

  • Elevated temperature
  • Depressed appetite and/or
  • Reduced energy level.

A physician can evaluate a patient's symptoms and make a diagnosis.. Further diagnostic measures may include X-ray and/or an MRI procedure.

Treatment

The objective of treatment is to minimize the pain and prevent the disease from causing disability. Treatment options are:

  • Anti-inflammatory pain-relieving medication, with or without Glucosamine

  • Appropriate knee bracing

  • Knee Exercise

  • Surgery (knee replacement)
